LIBERIAN PASSPORT HOLDERS GAIN ACCESS TO 34 AFRICAN DESTINATIONS

Liberian passport holders now have access to 34 destinations across Africa through visa-free entry, visa-on-arrival programs, and other simplified travel arrangements, marking continued progress in the country’s regional mobility.
According to 2026 passport mobility data updated on September 11, Liberia ranks 42nd among Africa’s 54 countries, with Liberian travelers able to access approximately 64 percent of destinations on the continent under varying entry arrangements.
A significant portion of this mobility is linked to Liberia’s membership in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), whose free-movement protocols provide Liberian citizens with visa-free travel across member states in West Africa.
Beyond the ECOWAS region, Liberian passport holders also benefit from simplified travel arrangements with several other African countries, including Kenya, Rwanda, Zambia, and the Central African Republic.
The expansion in travel access comes as Liberia continues diplomatic efforts aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and improving international mobility for its citizens. Under Foreign Affairs Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, the government has placed increased emphasis on diplomatic engagement, reciprocal travel arrangements, and improved consular services.
Despite the gains within Africa, Liberia’s passport continues to face significant limitations globally. The country reportedly holds a mobility score of 57 and ranks 162nd out of 199 countries, with Liberian citizens still required to obtain visas before traveling to many destinations in Europe, North America, the Gulf region, and the Middle East.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has indicated that efforts are continuing to negotiate bilateral visa-waiver agreements, modernize consular services, and pursue reciprocal arrangements that could further expand travel opportunities for Liberian citizens.
Greater passport mobility could have broader economic and social benefits for Liberia by creating easier access to regional markets, educational institutions, professional opportunities, tourism, and cross-border partnerships.
For Liberian entrepreneurs, students, professionals, and travelers, the expanded access represents another step toward greater integration with the African continent and increased opportunities for regional engagement.
