Historic Milestone: Liberia Reopens Embassy in India After 35 Years

NEW DELHI, INDIA | August 13, 2026. After more than 35 years without a resident diplomatic mission in India, the Republic of Liberia has officially reopened its Embassy in New Delhi, marking a significant milestone in Liberia–India relations and restoring Liberia’s permanent diplomatic presence in one of its most important partners in Asia.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mme. Sara Beysolow Nyanti, is in New Delhi to formally inaugurate the Embassy on behalf of His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., and the Government and people of Liberia.

Liberia’s Embassy in India was closed more than 35 years ago amid geopolitical and other challenges confronting the country at the time. Since then, successive administrations have pursued efforts to reestablish a resident diplomatic mission in India, recognizing the country’s growing strategic, economic, educational, and development importance to Liberia.

The reopening of the Embassy therefore represents the culmination of efforts spanning several administrations. Building upon the groundwork laid by previous governments, President Boakai’s administration has brought this longstanding national objective to completion, ensuring that Liberia once again maintains a permanent diplomatic presence in India.

Speaking ahead of the inauguration, Minister Nyanti described the reopening as both a major diplomatic achievement and an important step toward delivering practical benefits for Liberians.

“After more than three decades, Liberia once again has a permanent diplomatic home in India. This is a major milestone for our country and a testament to President Boakai’s commitment to strengthening Liberia’s global partnerships and ensuring that our diplomacy delivers tangible results for our people. We acknowledge the efforts of successive administrations that worked toward this goal, and today we are proud to finally bring it to fruition.”

The reopening is particularly significant given the large and growing number of Liberian students pursuing education and professional training in India, as well as Liberians traveling to the country for medical treatment. A resident Embassy will provide stronger consular services and direct assistance to Liberian citizens while helping to expand opportunities in scholarships, education, healthcare, professional training, and capacity building.

Beyond consular services, the Embassy will serve as Liberia’s principal diplomatic and economic platform in India. It will work to attract investment, facilitate trade and private-sector partnerships, deepen cooperation in agriculture, technology, infrastructure, healthcare, and education, and mobilize technical and development assistance.

These priorities are consistent with Liberia’s broader commitment to advancing economic diplomacy and using its international partnerships to support national development, job creation, institutional capacity, and economic growth.

India remains an important development and economic partner to Liberia, with cooperation spanning education, healthcare, agriculture, technology, infrastructure, capacity building, trade, and private-sector development.

The Government of Liberia expresses its appreciation to the Government of India for its cooperation and support in facilitating the establishment of the Embassy and looks forward to deepening the longstanding friendship and partnership between the two nations.

The reopening of Liberia’s Embassy in New Delhi signals the beginning of a renewed chapter in Liberia–India relations—one focused not only on stronger diplomatic engagement, but also on creating greater opportunities and delivering meaningful benefits for the people of Liberia.
